Before it was Tupelo, this place was called Gum Pond, for the tupelo gums that still stand in its low, wet spots and flare scarlet every fall. Sportsman Lawn and Landscape works the city's yards through that late season, cutting the last thick growth before frost and clearing leaves before they mat down over the grass. Downtown in Fairpark and up in the East Tupelo hills, an October afternoon slants gold across lawns just mown and blown clean. Fence lines get trimmed, curb edges squared off, and the yard heads into the cool months tidy instead of tangled. There is honest pride in that kind of finish, the kind a neighbor notices walking past with the dog.
