First light in Terry comes with dew still heavy on everything and the day's heat not yet made up its mind. That is the hour to start a lawn route: mowing while the air is still bearable, trimming the fence lines and the base of every tree, edging the walk, blowing the concrete clear. Yards around Terry and out toward Byram grow hard from March into November and want a steady hand the whole way through. Nothing complicated about it — cut at the right height, come back before it is needed, leave nothing behind but the smell. Lawns look after themselves better when somebody looks after them on time.
