Taylor is eight miles of red hills south of Oxford, a handful of buildings at a crossroads with the Yocona bottom lying off below. Oxford Garden Co. works those hills, where the clay is stubborn and the dogwoods light the tree line for two weeks every April. Gardens here get built slowly — beds turned, plants set, mulch laid — and then kept, with mowing, trimming, edging and weeding through a growing season that runs long and humid. There is a particular pleasure in a garden that looks like it belongs to the hill it sits on instead of arguing with it. By the time the sweetgums turn in November, the shape of the year's work is easy to read.
