February leaves Richland lawns the color of straw, the Bermuda gone dormant and the sky sitting low and gray for days at a stretch. Pete's Ground Service uses those weeks for the work that shows up later — beds edged back to a clean line, winter debris carried off, the ground made ready for green-up. When the grass wakes in March the cutting starts and does not quit until frost: mowing, edging, trimming, every hard surface blown off after. Rankin County hands out about eight growing months and one short rest, and both halves need somebody paying attention. Richland is home base, with Florence, Pearl, Byram and Star close by.
