Before sunup the hollows around Pontotoc fill with white fog, and a lawn cut the evening before wears its stripes like something left behind. Ghost grass leans into that hour — trucks rolling early, dew still heavy, the town not quite awake yet. By the time the fog lifts off the bottoms the grass is down, the mailbox post and the AC pad are trimmed around, and the truck is two streets over. Lots that have gotten away from somebody get the same treatment, knocked back and hauled off in a single visit. The only proof left is the quiet of it: grass at one height, a sharp border along the walk, a yard that looks like it did the tidying itself.
