Pelahatchie Bay reaches up just north of town, a long arm of the Ross Barnett Reservoir where the water goes pewter in late October. JL Outdoor Services works the yards between there and the highway — mowing, edging, string trimming, leaf and debris cleanup, and general grounds upkeep as the season tips over. Autumn in this part of Rankin County is slow and generous: the grass eases off, the light comes in sideways, and the work shifts from cutting to clearing. There is a plain pleasure in raking a yard down to clean turf and watching it hold that way for a week. Then spring comes back around, the route starts over, and none of it feels like repetition.
