In March the pines let go and Madison turns yellow — pollen on the windshields, pollen in the birdbaths, pollen drifting in the gutters like sulfur. Hopping's Landscape starts the year in that haze, cleaning winter's litter out of beds, cutting back what froze, and getting the first mow onto grass that is only half awake. From there the work settles into rhythm: mowing, trimming, edging, and blowing the drive down until the last of the yellow is gone from the concrete. Mulch goes in once the beds are stripped clean, and shrubs get shaped while they still have the whole growing season ahead to fill back out. Spring here is short and loud, and a yard that gets its start right in March coasts on that decision until October.
