About lawn gentlemen

Clarksdale wakes twice — once in the morning for work, and again after dark when music starts up on the downtown side streets. lawn gentlemen keeps to the daylight half, mowing, edging, trimming and neatening yards from the shady old streets near the river out to the newer ones by the highway. A cut lawn is a courtesy paid to a neighborhood, and around here courtesy carries weight. The moment to look for comes at the end: machines quiet, edges crisp along the walk, the grass all one height and cooling as the light goes long. Clarksdale, Lula, Coahoma and the roads between them make up the round.
