Spanish Lake sits low near the Missouri River bottomland north of the city, and when a storm moves through, it piles heavy over the subdivisions ringing the water and the cul-de-sacs that back up to it. Spanish Lake Community Association clears the drives and walkways through those looping streets, working from one dead end to the next until the whole loop is passable again. The lake itself freezes over during a stretch of hard cold, ringed by bare trees and quiet yards that hold onto snow longer than the busier roads nearby. Out here, the plowing route is less about straight lines and more about patience — cul-de-sac after cul-de-sac, each one its own small task. By the time the last driveway on the loop is scraped clean, the whole neighborhood feels like it's exhaled.
