February on the Meramec bluffs, woods bare and every lawn in the valley gone to dormant straw, is when the year quietly begins to turn over again. Seasons Cycle follows that turning across St. Louis: the first cut once the fescue wakes, the weekly rhythm of mowing and trimming through the thick middle months, aeration and overseeding as the nights cool, then leaf work until the last maple is finished. Each stage sets up the next, which is why a lawn opened in fall drinks better in July. There is craft in knowing when to cut short and when to leave it long, and the answer changes with the month. By the time the ground stiffens again, the yard is put to bed clean, edges true, ready for the whole circuit to start over.
