By mid-November the bluffs above the Mississippi in south county have gone bronze, and the sycamores drop their broad leaves faster than anyone can keep up with. The Outdoor Pros spend those short afternoons clearing them — off the turf, out of the fence corners, away from the storm grates — so the grass underneath is not smothered by the first wet freeze. The rest of the year runs on mowing, trimming, and edging, with feeding and seed to thicken what the summer thinned. A yard raked down to a clean, even nap in late fall is one of the more satisfying sights in this work. It also comes up faster in March, which is the real argument for doing it right.
