Out where the land begins folding toward the Meramec, a yard is really a clearing — hill on one side, woods on the other, and a line where the mowing stops. Knibbs Outdoor keeps those lines honest in the far western reaches of the St. Louis area, mowing the open ground, trimming the banks a deck cannot reach, and cutting back the brush that leans in from the treeline every summer. Late August out here smells like dry grass and cedar, and the cicadas make considerably more noise than the equipment. Fall is a long stretch of leaf work, since the woods send down far more than any lawn can absorb. The finish is an outdoor room a family can actually use, with the wild kept politely on its own side of the line.
