Sedalia's old Katy Depot still anchors downtown, a leftover of the rail line that built this prairie town, and the ground a few blocks away holds a different memory each August, when the Missouri State Fair fills acres of open grass and gravel with cars. C & E Excavating plows that same fairground lot come winter, wide, even passes across acreage built to hold thousands of cars, banked clean at the edges the way that scale of lot requires. Closer to downtown, the work tightens into driveways and loading docks near the old rail corridor, where a plow has to thread between parked trucks instead of running a straight quarter-mile line. Prairie wind here carries snow sideways more often than it falls straight down, drifting hard against anything tall enough to break the flat horizon. Getting ahead of that drift, from the fairground gates back to the depot streets, is the job every storm asks for.
