The first real green of the year shows up in the creek bottoms west of Weldon Spring, low ground catching warmth while the bluffs above are still bare. Spring Green opens the season down there in late March — winter debris pulled off the turf, matted patches opened up, the first cut taken once the ground firms enough to hold a mower without scarring. After that the calendar belongs to the grass: weekly mowing, trim lines held steady, beds kept off the lawn's shoulders. Missouri asks a lot of a yard between March mud and August heat, and the ones that come through are the ones tended early. Starting a lawn clean is the most hopeful part of the whole year.
