Rich Hill was built on coal — the shafts that drew miners out to this stretch of Bates County prairie in the 1880s are long closed, but the brick storefronts they built still line the old main street, and Dewey's Dozer Contracting runs its equipment past them on the way out to the farm roads that fan out in every direction from town. A dozer blade does different work than a plow truck: full lots, long gravel lanes, drifts packed hard enough to need real weight behind them. Out on the open Bates County prairie, wind can pile snow into a shape that outlasts the storm itself, and clearing it means understanding how the land and the wind conspired to put it there. The crew works from the edges of town outward, farm by farm, until the gravel roads tie back into pavement. It's slow, heavy work suited to a town that was built by people used to both.
