Some of Oakville's oldest streets were cut straight into the limestone bluffs above the Mississippi, which means Mills Construction spends its winter mornings working driveways set at angles a level would frown at. The same equipment that grades a foundation in warmer months gets swapped over to plow blades, wide enough to clear a hillside drive in a single controlled pass instead of fighting the slope one shovelful at a time. Ice tends to form first in the shaded cuts between the rock walls, so those spots get salted before the open stretches even need it. Down where the land finally levels out near the park land close to the river, the crew works fast and flat, banking snow along the tree lines instead of the driveway's edge. What's left, once the trucks move on, is a hillside you can drive up without easing off the gas halfway.
