The old alignment of Route 66 still runs through Marshfield, a two-lane reminder of the highway that once carried more traffic through here than the interstate ever will. Rice Excavating works the driveways and lots along that corridor, clearing gravel aprons and frontage roads that wear differently than any newer subdivision street. Snow on that old pavement melts and refreezes in a pattern all its own, the legacy of decades of frost heave and patched asphalt that never quite lies flat. Getting one of those frontage lots scraped down evenly, ruts and all, takes closer attention than a newer street would ask for. There's a stubborn kind of pride in keeping that old highway passable, no matter how many layers of patched blacktop sit underneath it.
