Rust and leather — that is what the bur oaks and the old hedgerows east of Liberty turn to once October gets hold of them. Lund Landscape works that stretch of the season hard, moving leaves off lawns before the rain glues them into a mat that will kill the grass underneath. The mowing tapers rather than stops, each cut a little lower, the mulched leaf and clipping mix hauled off where it is too thick to leave. Trimming and edging still happen, because a fence line gone shaggy shows worse in the fall than it ever does in June. There is real pleasure in the last pass of the year, when a yard lies clean and even under a low sun and you know it will winter well.
