The old Rock Island rail bed cuts through Lee's Summit as a walking trail now, trestle bridges and all, and it draws runners and dog-walkers even on the coldest mornings of the year. WellScape Lawn and Snow clears the driveways and lots that feed onto that corridor, working early enough that the day's first joggers find a clear path from their own front door to the trailhead. There's something right about a crew working that route before sunrise — the same corridor that once hauled freight now just needs to carry people safely to their morning exercise. A plowed driveway here is really the first link in somebody's whole routine. The trail itself belongs to the parks department, but the streets feeding it are cleared block by block before the first footprints show up in the snow.
