Fitzgerald spends most of the year building screen porches and handrails for houses tucked into the coves around the Lake of the Ozarks, work that only really stops once the docks start icing over. When winter closes in on Kiheka, the same crew comes back to the houses they built onto — clearing the steps down to the water, the rails they hung the summer before now doing double duty as something to hold onto on an icy morning. A lake house driveway carved into a bluff doesn't forgive a skipped plow pass the way a flat-country one might, so those are usually the first stops on the route. There's a kind of continuity in that, the same hands that framed a porch rail now keeping the steps under it clear enough to use. By the time the lake is done freezing at the edges, the crew has usually worked every cove access road on their list at least twice.
