The Finley River cuts a quiet valley through the Ozark hills here, and the same hollows that keep the water cool in July hold onto snow and shadow long after the ridgetops have melted clear. Matthews Landscapes runs the gravel and chip-seal roads of that valley with a plow set low enough to handle the ruts, clearing driveways that wind down through cedar and oak to reach the water. Snow falls lighter in this part of the Ozarks than it does further north, but when it comes it tends to ice over fast on the shaded valley floor, and the crew treats those low crossings before anything else on the route. A cleared lane out of a Finley hollow means a family can get to the highway without easing down a curve above the river in the dark.
