Eagle Rock takes its name from the bluffs above the water, and on clear winter mornings it is not unusual to see a bald eagle riding the cold air over the lake while the ridge road below is still buried in snow. Tripp's Outdoors runs its plow along that same ridge, clearing driveways cut into the bluff side where the grade drops steep toward the shoreline. The lake holds its own chill, and fog off the water often freezes onto the last stretch of road before it reaches the ridge top, so that section gets cleared twice on a hard morning. Down at the lake houses, the crew works the switchback drives carefully, blade angled to keep gravel from sliding off the shoulder into the trees below. There is something quietly good about clearing a road with that view opening up below it, water and rock and snow all catching the same pale light.
