A skid steer starts differently at four in the morning in January than it does in July — the diesel takes longer to catch, the hydraulics move stiff until they warm — and that cold-engine routine is how most of Lage's Concrete and excavating LLC's snow days begin. The same machines that grade a foundation pad or cut a drainage line in warmer months get fitted with plow blades and pushed out across the flatter industrial stretches east of downtown Columbia, clearing parking lots and access drives too wide for a hand shovel. It's heavy-equipment work, built for scale rather than a single front walk: a lot that would take an hour with a truck plow gets opened in a pass or two with the right blade. Once the big lots are clear, the same crew comes back through for the tighter spots — loading docks, curb cuts, the edges where a truck plow can't reach without a hand crew finishing the corners. There's a plain quiet to a cleared commercial lot before the first cars pull in, the asphalt showing black again under a low winter sky.
