June lawns on these hills are half a challenge and half a showpiece — steep front slopes, retaining walls, beds cut into the grade so the yard can hold itself together. Mowing them takes a line that follows the contour, and the trimmer finishes whatever the slope will not let a deck reach. Beds get edged and mulched, shrubs get shaped, and the walls and steps get swept so the whole thing reads clean from the street below. Fall means leaves, which on a hillside go everywhere at once and take a real pass to clear. It is good country for a green yard, and the grade only makes the finished look better.
