The ground out here is more rock than most people expect — chert gravel just under the sod, limestone shelving out wherever the hill breaks. Grass grows anyway, and in high summer it grows fast, so the mowing stays on schedule and the trimmer handles everything a deck cannot sit level on. Borders get cut where lawn meets the gravel drive, the drive gets blown off, and the beds get mulched and kept clear of what tries to move into them. Shrubs get trimmed back off the windows, and when the leaves come down they come off the lawn and out of the corners where they collect. The result is a place that looks tended even where the ground makes tending it hard.
