Gravel roads that drop into the hollows around Brooking hold onto a storm longer than the ridge tops do, shaded by oak and cedar that barely let the sun through in January. Denny & Sons Contractors runs equipment built to get down into those low spots, opening a lane back to a hillside barn or a homestead set against the timber long after a lighter truck would have turned around. The work usually starts at the top of a ridge and follows the drainage downhill, the same path the snow itself took, until a farm lane drifted shut at daybreak is passable again well before evening chores. Fence posts reappear one by one as the blade clears the gravel back to its edges, the lane narrowing to exactly the width it's always been.
