West Lakeland Township is oak country on the shoulder of the St. Croix, where the lots run long and the driveways run longer, up under trees that have stood there a while. On a January dawn the river valley holds a cold blue light, and Weiss Lawn & Snow is already down those drives with a plow, opening a lane and squaring off the turnaround before anyone has to leave for work. Walks get shoveled, steps get salted, and the banks go where they will not crowd the drive later in the winter. In summer the same properties want mowing and trimming, with clean lines around the oaks and the edge held tight where lawn gives way to gravel. It is a township of quiet roads, and quiet roads are at their best when they are passable.
