November on Lake Superior is the month of the long gray blows, when the water turns the color of iron and the first serious snow comes ashore riding on it. Mosher Trucking & Excavating meets that season with plow and truck — opening driveways around Two Harbors, clearing lots, hauling piled snow away once the banks have grown taller than the mirrors. Storms on this shore can drop a foot on the water side and a dusting three miles inland, so no two routes ever run the same night. Walks and entries get dug out along with the pavement, because a cleared drive that dead-ends in a snowbank is only half a job. It is loud, cold, thankless-looking work, and there is a great deal of satisfaction in it.
