Thief River Falls is a town named for a meeting of waters — the Thief River sliding into the Red Lake River just above the dam — and life here still bends around that current. AMS Construction is a builder's outfit that keeps working when the ground does not: tending lawns through the brief, bright northern summer, then hanging the plow when the sky turns to iron in November. On storm mornings the crew is out while the streetlamps are still on, opening driveways so the day can start on time. In July the same hands keep yards trimmed and even, green squares set against a prairie sky that goes on forever. Serving Thief River Falls and the towns around it, they take a plain satisfaction in the finished thing — a clean drive, a straight edge, a job you can stand back and look at.
