The basalt walls of the Dalles keep the cold penned above Taylors Falls, and the town's streets tip down off Angel Hill toward the St. Croix at grades that get interesting after a storm. J.C. Construction plows those hills, along with the driveways and lots that one night of snow can close off entirely. Steep pavement changes the whole job: pushes are planned so nothing ends up stacked where it will slide back, and ice control is the difference between a passable hill and a stranded car. Walks and entries are cleared by hand wherever the ground falls away too fast for a blade. By the time sun finally reaches the river gorge, the way down into town is already open.
