About North Maintenance

February in Stillwater belongs to the north wind — it crosses the frozen St. Croix and finds every driveway in town. North Maintenance is built for that month: plowing, shoveling, and clearing so morning routines survive whatever blew in overnight. But the name covers the whole compass of the year, and when the wind finally swings south the same crew is mowing and maintaining lawns through the green months. Maintenance is an unglamorous word for a genuinely hopeful act — keeping a place ready, again and again. Snow work in the white season, lawn work in the growing one, all of it in the river valley.
