By mid-October the pasture edges around Stanford wear frost until nine in the morning, and the bur oaks hold onto their brown leaves like they mean to keep them. Roden Outdoor’s works the season all the way out to its end — the final cuts of the year, trimming, and the leaf cleanups that take more than one visit whenever oaks are involved. Cold-morning mowing has a pleasure of its own: the deck cuts clean, the clippings stay put, and a lawn settles into its winter shape. Earlier in the year those same yards get the weekly rounds, mowed and edged while everything is still racing. Either way it comes down to the finish at the edges, where a lawn either looks tended or plainly does not.
