St. Cloud is built on granite, and in January the cold seems to rise up out of the rock as much as fall from the sky, with steam standing over the open water of the Mississippi at first light. Prom Excavating is out ahead of that light, plowing drives and lots so the city's first shift finds a clear way in. Storms cross the plains with wind behind them here, which means a lot pushed clean at midnight can want a second pass by six. Walks get shoveled and treated, and banks get stacked back where they will not blind a driveway exit. The measure of the whole night is a lot at sunrise with pavement showing corner to corner.
