Pike Bay hangs off the south side of Cass Lake inside the Chippewa National Forest, red pine standing in ranks over ground that is more sand than soil. Kosel Services Landscaping works the clearings people have carved out in there — cabin yards, township lots, the strip of green somebody holds between a porch and the trees — cutting it back, trimming close and running a clean edge along the drive. Grass grows in a hurry through the brief northern summer and then stops on a dime, so the season gets worked hard while it lasts. Under those pines the light comes down in pieces, and a cut lawn reads almost like a room with walls. Spring and fall the job turns to clearing needles and winter debris, giving a place its outline back.
