Palisade is a river town on a stretch of the Mississippi that is still narrow and dark and lined with tamarack, up where Aitkin County gives itself over to bog and wild rice. Cold settles into that low ground and stays; the river smokes at dawn, frost grows feathers on the fence wire, and the thermometer does things people downstate only read about. Riggs Outdoors plows and clears through all of it, opening driveways and lanes so a place a mile off the county road stays connected to the rest of the winter. Storms come in slow and heavy from the northwest, and the snow up here is dry enough to move well and deep enough to matter. There is a plain, unshowy pride in a lane cut clean before the sun is even over the trees.
