The Rum River leaves Mille Lacs and threads south through Ogechie and Shakopee lakes before it ever meets a bridge, and the yards along that water near Onamia are half lawn and half woods. Lakeside Lawn Care, LLC keeps them — mowing, trimming and edging, cleanups in spring and fall, plowing and shoveling once the cold sets its hooks in. Shoreline grass grows in sandy, root-laced ground beneath red pine, so mowing here is as much navigation as cutting. On a July morning the work smells like cut grass and lake water at the same time, which is not a bad way to spend a few hours. By December the same lane needs a truck instead of a mower, and the family driving up for the weekend finds it waiting for them.
