Mille Lacs Lake is wide enough to make its own weather, and standing in Onamia at the south end you can feel the wind arrive off it with nothing at all in the way. Eagle Ridge Enterprises runs snow through that country — plowing driveways and lots, opening lanes, clearing walks, sanding and salting the glare ice a cold snap leaves behind. By January the shacks are strung out on the lake and the highway crews are working nights, and every residential drive still has to be passable by breakfast. There is a specific quiet at four in the morning up here: engine, heater, headlights, and nothing else for a couple of miles. Then the blade drops and the day is allowed to begin.
