Northeast Itasca is bog and birch and jack pine, and the lawns up here were carved out of it one clearing at a time. Itasca Gardening and Landscape Design tends those clearings — mowing the open ground, cutting back the alder and willow that lean in from the edges, keeping beds distinct from the forest floor. The growing season is short this far north, so every warm week counts, and grass kept even through July still looks right when the tamarack goes gold. Spring means raking off the flattened mat the snow leaves behind and letting the soil find the long light again. It is quiet work, done within earshot of a lake somewhere past the trees.
