Winter nights in New York Mills are long and genuinely dark, and in a town with Finnish roots the smell of sauna smoke on a January evening is part of the weather. Kangas Construction is out in it, plowing drives and lots, clearing walks, breaking the ridge at the street so nobody has to shovel the same spot twice. Highway 10 keeps moving through a storm, but the side streets and the farm approaches are their own project and they get opened one at a time. Ice gets treated where it forms on steps and aprons. The whole point is a clear lane at first light and a household that never had to think about it.
