On the Mesabi in June the birch leaf out late and all at once, and the roadside in Nashwauk township carries a faint red dust that settles on whatever the wind can reach. The growing season this far north is short and it does not waste a day, so the schedule stays tight from last frost to first. A clean cut on Iron Range ground reads bright against the dark spruce standing behind it. That contrast is most of the reward.
