By mid-September the tamarack and aspen around the small lakes north of Nashwauk begin to turn, and the cabins in the township start the slow business of closing up. North Lakes lawn takes the last cuts of the year then — a final low pass so the grass goes under the snow short, leaves hauled away, the yard left square and quiet for six months. Through the summer it is the ordinary loop of mowing, trimming and edging, kept on schedule because the season here is brief. There is something deeply satisfying about the last mow of an Iron Range autumn: the machine going quiet, the lot looking exactly finished.
