Out in Middleville Township the wind has nothing to slow it down between the fields, so a clear night after a storm can be worse than the storm itself — ground snow moving sideways, filling a driveway back in by morning. Tom's Outdoor Service goes out into that, plowing farm approaches and long driveways, cutting the banks wide so the next drift has somewhere to land, shoveling walks and steps down to the boards. The lakes glow faint blue at first light, Howard Lake's water tower comes up out of the flat, and the plow leaves one clean lane behind it. Some mornings the job is a single pass; some mornings it is three, hours apart. Middleville, Howard Lake, Winsted, Waverly and Cokato get whichever the sky asks for.
