Mahnomen carries the word manoomin — the wild rice that still ripens in the shallow water of this county — and the Wild Rice River goes past on its way west. Winter is long on the open ground of the White Earth country, and a storm can leave a driveway unrecognizable by morning. Lawn Monkeys plows the drives, yards and lots, shovels the walks, and gets people back out to the county road. Then the ice goes out, the ground turns, and the work becomes mowing, trimming and edging while summer runs its short, bright course. Both halves of the year come down to the same thing: a property somebody can actually use.
