Wind crosses Lower Red Lake unbroken, and by February it has rebuilt drifts across every approach and yard opening for miles. Ellies Plowing works exactly that: plowing drives and access roads, pushing back what the wind put down overnight, clearing walks and entries to solid footing. Winter up here is long and it is serious — dark early, cold deep, the lake a white plain running out to the horizon. Getting a truck out of a yard and onto the road is no small thing when the nearest town is a drive away. That is the reason for the work, and the reason it happens at whatever hour the snow chooses.
