Snow does not simply fall on Todd County, it travels — the wind lifts what has already landed and packs it back into the driveway by first light. Chad Twardowski Excavating INC is out ahead of that, plowing before dawn so the drive is open while the yard light is still the only light in the section. Long Prairie lies low along its river with open fields running off on either side, and the drifts build in the same places every winter; knowing where they will be is most of the work. Driveways, farmyards, and lots get cleared and the piles stacked where they will not blow back or block the view pulling out. Walks are opened last, so the path from the door is the newest thing cleared. It is cold, early work, and there is real satisfaction in a place that looks handled by sunrise.
