Highway 12 comes through Litchfield in a straight run past the elevators, and on a January morning it is plowed and lit long before the coffee shop turns its sign on. Michael Murphy Construction works the town side of that hour — pushing snow off driveways and lots, clearing sidewalks and entries, hauling piles away when there is nowhere left to stack them. Grit goes down on the slick spots a thaw-and-freeze leaves behind. None of it is complicated; it is simply done all the way, corner to corner, before anybody needs it. That, in the end, is the whole point of the work.
