Spruce windbreaks stand in rows along the section roads, planted by people who knew exactly which way the weather comes from. In their lee the grass grows deep and slow; twenty feet out in the open it browns by August, and a La Grand yard is usually both at once. So the mowing follows the ground rather than the calendar, the trimming goes tight to posts and foundations, and the edge gets worked until the line is unmistakable. Twice a year the yard is cleared out entirely — winter's dead thatch off in April, the leaves gone in November — because turf only carries itself if you give it the start. Work out here long enough and you read a property the way the shelterbelt planters did, which is by the wind.
