The hills around La Grand are glacial leftovers: gravel ridges, kettle hollows with a lake in every low spot, burr oaks holding the high ground. Spring shows up unevenly — the south slope is green and ready while the north side of the same yard lies cold and matted — so the year opens with cleanup, raking out winter thatch and the sand thrown up along the drives. Summer is a steady turn of cutting, trimming and held borders, with overseeding where the oak shade thins the turf. Autumn is leaves, and there are a great many of them. By the time the lakes go glass-flat in September, the yards up on the ridge look combed.
