A storm here gives you a rhythm rather than a deadline: push at midnight, push again at four, then come back at seven for the ridge the city plow left across the end of the drive. Irondale is a name with iron in it, and its winters carry the same weight — heavy wet snow one week, dry powder drifting off open ground the next, each one asking for a different blade angle. We plow driveways and lots, clear walks and steps down to the surface, and put salt or sand where ice sets up in the shade and stays. What matters is the small relief of a clear driveway at daybreak: boots on pavement, nobody late, the day starting on time. When it snows again the next night, we are back.
