Hopkins once turned out farm machinery by the trainload, and a certain fondness for well-made things never quite left the place. The Lawnsmith carries the name honestly — mowing, edging, trimming, and the seasonal cleanups that put a yard back in order in April and again in November. Around Central Park the lots are old and shaded, which asks for a lighter hand and an eye for where the grass actually wants to grow. Winter turns the work to plowing and clearing walks, the drive opened early and the banks pushed back far enough to last the week. A crisp edge in June, a bare driveway in January: the same care, different weather.
